It's been a busy fall for the Cupcakes, individually and as a group, and we're still finding our way in the virtual mode as we bridge physical distances. Mostly this means more bang for our buck when we do get together, with a lot of blogging and e-mails in-between.
We like to keep it casual, but we have decided that we do want to read the same books in the same months and keep going with the Chronicles whenever and however we may fancy (and we do fancy the fancy, generally speaking).
But how to choose with so many books, so little time -- and each of us with piles and piles of books on the bedside table, beside the couch, at the kitchen counter? It's a book, book world. We all have multiple reading going at the same time (Short Attention Span Theater), and there are new distractions every day.
And so it's assignment time! For the month of November, Catherine has chosen a book by Kathryn Stockett, The Help. And we have our December book already: Bright-Sided, by Barbara Ehrenreich. I'm really looking forward to reading both of these books with the Cupcakes as we go through the holiday season.
Meanwhile, can we all do a bedside documentary or a book list? I love the ones we've put up in the past and it's fun to track those over time. Mine is eclectic but very Italy-focused right now as we get ready for our trip. I'll put something up soon.
And let's not forget Annie Lamott. Maybe in addition to Forster's "Only Connect," we can have "Bird by Bird" as a Talking Cupcake motto. We're all getting there, bird by bird. And what's the point? Well, only to connect.

I've been enjoying Annie Lamott -- sorry not to have blogged in a while. This bird by bird has sort of flown the coop but I'll come back with The Help. Picking that up today.

Oh thank you for this! Not only have we needed Maggie's organizational skill but her determined prowess to get things right. What a bunch of lazy Cupcakes we've been (ok, I'm speaking for myself here...)! Maybe not lazy in other realms but in this needed, important place we've fallen short...except for Peaches and her amazing recipes. That temptress!
So, I really like your other request too, as guess what I'm doing on this glorious balmy, sun-drenched fall day? Cleaning my bedside table! No kidding...the ultimate in puttering.
In the meantime I have to confess that one thing I miss about my old house is those endless bookshelves! Kind of like the ones in your blog entry. Of course, we have bought some down here but they are already bursting with mostly new (and old) book purchases from the past two years. The rest remain in boxes...
I think I "hoard" books because I know that if I was ever meant to stay inside, or if a major world disaster, I'd still have something to do.
The Hickory Nut Athenaeum.
Thanks for the butt kick and the blog! Enjoy THE HELP--I think it will be interesting reading. As with most novels, however, it's taking me a bit of time to get into it. Why is THAT when I generally can't put down a memoir?

Who posted? Must have been Queenie--she's always having to take charge of those lazy-ass Cupcakes!
I heartily approve of getting them back on track. Even though I never lack for reading material it's fun to see what books those characters choose.
Now if only Peaches would pop some of those baked goods in the mail we'd be all set!

Well, it's about time this group gets some HELP! Good lord, I just can't imagine why you aren't all in a nut house already! I mean, Charlotte's clearly flown the coop, Della has become gnome-phobic on some ridge in the middle of Methuselah, and last I heard Tammy and Earle hijacked an RV in a Walmart parking lot and stocked it with ammo for the End Times!
Bertha, it's really about you and me at this point. We need to set this loony birds straight. As for "help," I'll bet they wouldn't know how to shuck corn if it was staring them in the face--or clean an outhouse, either.
Your (sane) friend,
Shirley
